There was communication between these and other great houses through lines of sight
and a road system connecting over 150 great houses in the region.
Sophisticated astronomical markers were incorporated in the buildings
themselves, as well as such special features as Fajada Butte.
There a spiral was shot through with a dagger of light from the sun,
accurately marking summer and winter solstices, and spring and autumnal equinox.
Unfortunately, human traffic helped cause a shifting of the
stones, the alignment is no longer precise and access to the site is
limited to monitoring.
Built between about 850 and 1150, the great houses of Chaco Canyon were
carefully placed in a sacred landscape which still has deep spiritual
meaning for descendants, including the Navajo, Pueblo peoples, Hopi and
other tribes.
Petroglyphs in the area range from early Anasazi to historic Navajo.
There are also some pictographs, including one that appears to depict the
supernova seen from earth in 1054.
