petroglyphs gallery
newgrange
Newgrange is one of the oldest buildings in Europe, dating to about 3200 bc.
Located on a ridge at a bend in the river Boyne, it has commanding views
and can be seen from some distance.
It is a passage mound, built so that at dawn on
midwinter's day the interior is illuminated by the sunlight passing through an
ingenious roof-box.

Many of the kerbstones and interior walls are covered with carvings.
Some of
these can be clearly interpreted as calendar descriptions and indications of the
alignment when the light enters the passage. |

Others appear to be descriptions of the mound and the others nearby, Knowth
and Dowth - both erected around the same time on minor lunar alignments, with
passages which illuminate at different times of the year.

 |
Most of the petroglyphs remain obscure to us, without
any other knowledge of their creators. Still, some essence of communication is
completed, across all that time. |

|
There's a sense of awe, even reverence most people experience inside the
mound - time and space seem almost shifted, one is struck by the nearness of
those who made this remarkable place.
