knowth
Knowth is a passage mound located 1.3 km north-west of Newgrange, on the river Boyne.
Constructed around 3500 bc, this is one of the oldest known buildings in Europe.
It is aligned
on a minor lunar standstill, with passages aligned with sunrise and sunset at the
equinox.

Another passage mound, Dowth, lies on another minor lunar standstill 2 km east of
Newgrange and has passages aligned with midwinter sunset and the cylindrical quarter days
of November and February.
Many of the interior stones bear more abstract designs, perhaps impossible to
decipher without further information about it's designers

At Knowth, most of the kerbstones and many of the interior stones are
decorated. One kerbstone can be read as an accurate 365 day solar
calendar.
Using this inscription as a
sort of key, other stones can be read as describing various measurements of days, weeks,
months, seasons and the passage and relationships of the sun and moon at different times of
the year.
